Algae Identification

Algae are important indicators of ecosystem health and integrity, as they form the basis of most aquatic food chains. Almost all aquatic animals depend on this primary producer. Algae are also a good indicator of water quality, as their abundance and community composition most often reflect (and have the ability to influence) water chemistry, such as pH and nutrient levels. CD BioSciences has years of combined experience providing algal identification, analysis and laboratory services in partnership with algae, which play an integral role in the environment and contribute to the majority of primary productivity in water bodies. According to the species combination, it can be judged whether the ecosystem is in a state of equilibrium. In some cases, excessive primary productivity can have detrimental effects (i.e., harmful algal blooms). CD BioSciences has the capability and resources to quickly resolve your water quality problems by analyzing microcystin samples.

Unlike epiphytes, phytoplankton consist of algae in the open water column. Samples can provide insights into water health based on species assemblages. Routine phytoplankton monitoring is also important as a means of screening for potentially toxic and harmful algal blooms.

Periphyton Analysis

Periphytons are combined samples of algae and other microbes that attach to underwater vegetation of benthic organisms. Usually composed of diatoms and mollusks, epiphytes can be important indicators of physical, chemical, and biological changes in aquatic ecosystems.

Zooplankton Analysis

Zooplankton Analysis

Zooplankton are small organisms that drift in open water, and in freshwater mainly include copepods or small crustaceans and rotifers. Given their unique position in the food chain, zooplankton are ideal indicators of water quality. At CD BioSciences, our team of experienced taxonomists use specific analytical methods to classify all species.
