Green Algae Culture

Green Algae Culture

Green algae are the most diverse species of algae, with more than 7,000 species growing in various habitats. Green algae are a paraphyletic group because they do not include the plant family. Like plants, green algae contain two forms of chlorophyll, which they use to capture light energy to fuel sugar production, but unlike plants, they are primarily aquatic. Like other algae, green algae are an essential food source for herbivorous marine life, such as fish, crustaceans, and gastropods, including conch snails. Humans also use green algae for food. β-carotene, a pigment found in green algae, is used as a food coloring. Carotene has also been shown to be very effective in preventing certain cancers, including lung cancer. Green algae have some unique qualities, such as high growth rates and polysaccharide content that are not affected by geography/season. Most importantly, green algae grow faster and do not require agricultural land/inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, and water) compared to land-based sources, with the potential for large-scale production. Therefore, green algae are potential feedstock for the production of biofuels, biomaterials, and high-value chemicals.
