Screening of Marine Yeasts to Produce Unsaturated Fatty Acids

Marine microbes are competent organisms, some of which can accumulate large amounts of lipids. Microorganisms have received extensive attention for their potential in the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Polyunsaturated fatty acids are of scientific interest due to their important health-promoting effects on higher organisms, including humans. Current sources of PUFAs (animal and vegetable) have associated limitations, leading to growing interest in microbial PUFAs as the most reliable alternative sources. The focus is on adding product value to existing oleaginous microorganisms or by implementing new biotech strategies to discover new microorganisms to compete with other sources. Studies have found that using yeast to produce unsaturated fatty acids can lead to higher yields and lower costs.

Our Services

CD BioSciences is a company with an international customer base. We also work with universities, research institutes, small companies and start-ups. We provide a one-stop service for the production of unsaturated fatty acids from yeast. We offer a variety of methods and equipment to choose from to meet your research needs.

  • Isolation of Marine Yeasts Service
CD BioSciences studies the potential of marine yeast to produce polyunsaturated fatty acids. CD BioSciences' analysis of yeast lipids using Nile Red fluorescence microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and gas chromatography helped select the most promising PUFA producers among the marine-derived yeasts studied.
  • Primary Screening Service
CD BioSciences uses microscopic methods for screening. Oil globule wet patch and modified Sudan Black B staining for initial screening of oil storage yeast.  Yeasts with fast growth and oil accumulation are screened for further screening.
  • Secondary Screening Service
CD BioSciences derives oils from marine yeast to fatty acyl methyl esters and analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID).
  • Characterization and Identification of Marine Yeasts Isolated Service
Molecular identification of marine yeasts is based on 18S rRNA gene sequence analysis.
  • Selection of Media and Growth Optimization Service
Media optimization at CD BioSciences includes optimization of the growth parameters temperature, pH, salt concentration and rotational speed for shake flask cultures.
  • Solid Substrate Fermentation Service
CD BioSciences supplements various carbon sources during fermentation to increase C: N content, resulting in high lipid accumulation.
  • Toxicological Study of Biomeal Prepared Service
CD BioSciences fermented a cornmeal-based substrate with yeast and tested the resulting biomeal for nutritional safety.

Capabilities of Our R&D Department

Our R&D department focuses on optimizing all aspects of marine yeast production, including strain selection, yield optimization and cost reduction, resulting in improved biochemical and functional properties of the final unsaturated fatty acids. All development efforts are designed to meet the specific needs of CD BioSciences' business and research partners.
