Fish Cell Culture

Fish-derived cell lines have been established as promising tools for studying many critical issues in aquaculture, including fish growth, disease, reproduction, genetics, and biotechnology. Fish cell lines are easier to maintain under flexible temperature regimes and hypoxic conditions, making them superior to mammalian cell lines as in vitro tools. Compared with mammalian cell culture, fish cell culture has several advantages in terms of adaptation to a wide temperature range, higher tolerance to hypoxia, and easier maintenance of cell culture for a long time. Great excitement has been observed in establishing and characterizing new fish cell lines representing different fish species and tissue types. Fish cell lines have great potential as model systems for the study of fish diseases, immunology, biotechnology, nutrition, and toxicity testing of chemicals and therapeutics used in aquaculture, as they are ideal surrogates for whole organisms, involving increasingly dubious ethical issues. In vitro models have been used to study viral replication and genetics and for the production of experimental vaccines for aquaculture.
