Echinodermata Cell Culture

Named for their spiny skin, the Echinodermata is a collection of about 7,000 described biological species. Echinoderms are specialized marine organisms. Echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, sea cucumbers, sea snakes, and crinoids. Adult echinoderms exhibit pentaaxial symmetry and possess a calcareous endoskeleton composed of ossicles. The endoskeleton developed from epidermal cells, which may have chromatophores, which give these animals their vibrant colors, and toxin-filled cells. Echinoderms are important research models for a wide range of biological questions. In particular, the echinoderm embryo is an exemplary model for dissecting the molecular and cellular processes that drive development and for testing how these processes have been modified by evolution to generate the wide morphological diversity observed in the phylum. Modern attempts to characterize these processes rely on some degree of genomic analysis; from querying annotated gene sets to functional genomics experiments to identify candidate cis-regulatory sequences.
