Development of Marine Analgesic Drug

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and narcotic analgesics (opioids) are widely used to reduce pain, reduce fever, and inflammation. However, opioids and NSAIDs only relieve 50% of pain in about 30% of patients. NSAIDs are known to increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding, heart disease, and kidney disease. Potentially serious side effects of opioids include decreased ability to breathe and low blood pressure. Therefore, research to find alternative ways to treat pain is critical. Natural products provide a promising source of new chemical entities that can be used in the treatment of pain. Seventy percent of the world's surface is covered by water bodies, and marine natural resources within it would be a potential source of metabolites with analgesic/antinociceptive activity. Ziconotide, for example, was the first marine drug approved for the treatment of pain. Also known as Prialt, it was originally extracted from the marine snail Conus magus.
