Quantification of Marine Biosurfactant

Marine biosurfactants are surface-active metabolites produced by a variety of microorganisms. The development of fast and accurate methods for estimating biosurfactant concentrations and yields is another important factor in the selection of strains with high production characteristics and the routine estimation of biosurfactant production by various strains in different media and culture conditions.  The quantification of biosurfactants produced by diverse marine microorganisms is a time-consuming and difficult task due to the lack of fast, efficient and accurate methods. CD BioSciences is a leading provider of surfactant quantitative analysis services to the consumer goods industry and surfactant manufacturers. CD BioSciences utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation to efficiently and accurately evaluate products and materials for surfactants. Our liquid separation laboratories are equipped with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) instruments for the separation, identification, and quantification of surfactant.

Our Services

When you work with us, our experts will first consult with you to discuss project goals and gather any available information about the product. Background information on marine surfactants can greatly help identify surfactants and reduce the time required for projects. Our services are listed as follows, but are not limited to:

  • Quantitative Analysis of Anionic Surfactants
    • Direct two-phase titration
    • Methylene blue spectrophotometry
    • Bromocresol green alkaline phase separation titration
    • Dye indicator-complex quantitative method
    • UV spectroscopy analysis
    • P-toluidine method
    • Hydrolysis analysis
  • Quantitative Analysis of Cationic Surfactants
    • Methylene blue phase separation titration
    • Bromophenol blue separation phase reverse titration
    • Bromocresol green phase reverse titration
    • Mixed indicator method
  • Quantitative Analysis of Zwitterionic Surfactants
  • Quantitative Analysis of Nonionic Surfactants

Techniques Used for the Process

Our laboratory is equipped with LC-MS instruments that provide accurate mass information for the components in the sample. This results in the timely distribution of components in the product. LC-MS can also detect compounds without UV chromophores that cannot be detected by HPLC-UV. Once determined, the surfactant in the sample can be quantified using UPLC, HPLC or LC-MS. Other instruments offered by CD BioSciences include GC-MS, NMR, FT-IR, ICP and several others.
