Fish Early Life Stage Toxicity Test

Long-term effects require repeated exposure and may take months or years to appear. This is called "chronic toxicity". Cancer, genetic alterations, allergic reactions, hormonal changes, and central nervous system toxicity are some examples. These effects could be predicted from studies performed on zebrafish larvae at early life stages. The early life stages of fish are highly sensitive to chemicals reaching the water column, affecting the development and growth of juvenile fish. Therefore, this test system is used for general toxicity assessment evaluation of compounds. Furthermore, hatchability and developmental parameters are also sensitive to endocrine disruptors. This assay is designed to determine the lethal and sublethal effects of chemicals on the early life stages of the tested fish. Our extensive circulation systems for fish are set up with high-tech technical equipment and operated by highly skilled scientists and technicians.

Our Services

All studies at CD BioSciences are planned and executed by teams of experienced scientists and technicians, with analytical dose validation and fate of active ingredients being carried out as parallel as possible to the biological part of the study. We can also adapt our services to provide custom testing to meet your specific data requirements. Our testing organisms are listed, but are not limited to:

  • Pimephales promelas
  • Oncorhynchus mykiss
  • Zebrafish
  • Medaka

Course of the Test

  • Freshly fertilized eggs are exposed to a range of test substance concentrations under flow-through or semi-static conditions.
  • Typically, 5 concentrations in one geometric row and one control are tested. The maximum concentration tested is the LC50 value derived from the acute 96-hour test or 10 mg/L.
  • Exposure time depends on the fish species under investigation, e.g., 30 days after hatching for zebrafish.

Advantages of Fish Early Life Stage Toxicity Test

  • Valuable information for estimating chronic lethal and sublethal effects of a compound in as little as 30 days.
  • Available for a broad range of candidate compounds regardless of mode of action, volatility, solubility, and hydrophobicity.
  • General deformities and abnormal behaviors are also evaluated.

Endpoints of Fish Early Life Stage Toxicity Test

Evaluation endpoints focused on survival, hatching time, abnormal appearance, and body length. weight. The following parameters will be determined on days 10, 20, and 30:

  • Stage of embryonic development
  • Hatching
  • Survival
  • Statistical evaluation
  • General morphological abnormalities
  • Abnormal behavior
  • Body weight
  • Body length
