In vitro cell culture systems for molluscs have greatly advanced our fundamental understanding of the complex physiological processes that occur within or between tissue-specific cells, yielding information not obtainable using intact animal models. In vitro culture of gastropod neuronal c ells shows how simplified cellular models can help us understand complex networks in intact organisms. Primary cell cultures from marine and freshwater bivalves and gastropods are used as biomonitors of environmental pollutants, models for gene transfer techniques, and in the study of innate immunity and neoplastic diseases. In fact, mollusk cells can be derived from almost any tissue. However, their ability to survive and thrive in such artificial environments depends on a myriad of variables, including avoiding damage during tissue isolation and cell breakdown, microbial contamination, and the need to identify those physical and chemical culture conditions that have an impact on isolation.

  • Mycoplasma testing: Our highly sensitive and specific PCR-based method detects multiple strains of mycoplasma in your cell or media samples. We analyze amplified PCR fragments from any mycoplasma using a bioanalyzer, enabling accurate, fast and cost-effective mycoplasma detection.
  • Sterility and viral testing: We routinely test all cells we receive and ship for bacteria and mold. We can also perform virus and pathogen testing on tissue samples. Available methods for virus detection in cell cultures include virus detection in mice and rats using PCR-based methods.
