Purification of Algal Extracts

Algae are lower organisms that grow in the ocean and contain other auxiliary pigments such as chlorophyll. Currently, about 70 kinds of algae in the sea can be food by humans, such as seaweed, stone lily, kelp, and so on. Generally, the protein content of green algae and red algae is higher than that of brown algae. Most brown algae used for industrial development have a protein content of less than 15% (dry weight), and some green algae have a protein content of between 10% and 26%. The algae with higher protein content are red algae, and some species of red algae have a protein content of 47%, which is higher than the protein content of soybeans. Algae are rich in proteins such as phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, and phycoerythrin. Algal proteins can be used as natural pigments in industries such as food, cosmetics, dyes, etc., and can also be made into fluorescent reagents for clinical medical diagnosis and research fields such as immunochemistry and bioengineering. In addition, it can also be made into food and medicine for medical care and has a wide range of applications and high development and utilization value.

Our Extraction and Purification Methods of Algal Protein

Purification of Algal Extracts
  • Aqueous solution, enzymatic extraction
The aqueous solution of dilute salt and buffer system has good protein stability and a high solubility and is the most commonly used protein extraction solvent.
  • Repeated freeze-thaw method
The freeze-thaw method means that cells can rupture due to the formation of ice crystals in the cells and the increase in the salt concentration in the remaining liquid during repeated freezing and thawing.
  • Ultrasonic fragmentation extraction method
Our swelling method extracts phycoerythrin with high yield and purity.
  • High-pressure homogenization
We provide a high-pressure homogenization method suitable for large-scale separation and purification of algal proteins in industry.
  • Salting out
Our scientists initially purify the crude extract by a two-step salting-out procedure to obtain the purified protein from the algae.
