Red Seaweed Analysis

Red Seaweed Analysis

Red seaweed belongs to the phylum Rhodophyta, which takes its name from the greek rhodo (pink) and phyta (plant), an ancient, abundant, marketable organism with a unique way of reproduction. The red color of red seaweed is caused by phycoerythrin and phycocyanin, which mask other pigments, chlorophyll a (but not chlorophyll b), beta-carotene, and many unique luteins. The main reserves are usually rhubarb starch and emodin, there is no real starch like higher plants and green seaweed. The walls are made of cellulose, agar and carrageenan. Both long-chain polysaccharides are widely used commercially. The red algae Kappaphycus and Betaphycus are now the most important sources of carrageenan. Carrageenan is a common ingredient in foods, especially yogurt, chocolate milk, and prepared puddings. Gracilaria, Gelidium, Pterostilbene and other red seaweed are used in the manufacture of the most important agars, widely used as a growth medium for microorganisms, as well as in food and biotechnology applications.

Our Services

For each component identified by the analysis, each red algae sample will be analyzed in duplicate, and we provide component data for each replicate along with the mean and standard deviation between replicates. Our analysis protocols generally provide highly accurate results for customers.

  • Carbohydrate Composition Analysis of Red Seaweed
In red seaweed, the main polysaccharides are agar, carrageenan, cellulose and mannan. Agar is a mixture of the main component agarose and agarose.
  • Bioactive Compounds Analysis of Red Seaweed
Red algae are rich in natural plant growth hormones and beneficial trace elements. The extract contains high levels of natural plant growth hormones such as auxins, cytokines and gibberellins.
  • Amino Acids Analysis of Red Seaweed
Our expertise in ion chromatography has allowed us to develop protocols for determining the amino acid composition of red seaweed.
  • Fatty Acid Content Analysis of Red Seaweed
Our scientists specialize in extracting and analyzing fatty acids from various types of red algae. Due to the understanding of the biological uses of fatty acids, it is most commonly used in Western societies to treat obesity and cardiovascular problems.
  • Total Polyphenols Analysis of Red Algae
We provide in vitro antioxidant studies of red seaweed polyphenols. Our services are listed as follows, but are not limited to:
    • Extraction of crude polyphenols
    • Purification polyphenol compound
    • Estimation of total phenolic content
    • Phytochemical analysis

Our Equipment Used for Red Seaweed Analysis

Ion Chromatography

Ion Chromatography

We have strong expertise in the use of ion chromatography and the development of relevant products for the analysis of the algae industry. In particular, we will able to analyze a wide variety of carbohydrates and their degradation products using our system.

Autoclave

Autoclave

The autoclave was used to analyze the lignin and structural sugars (cellulose and hemicellulose) content in red algae samples.
