Identification of Marine Bacteria

Identification of Marine Bacteria

Marine bacteria are single-celled organisms that can be shaped like small spheres, rods, or spirochetes. They are usually very small, with cells only a few micrometers in diameter (about 1/100 the width of a human hair). There are different types of marine bacteria, such as autotrophic and heterotrophic, photoenergy and chemical energy, aerobic and anaerobic, parasitic and saprophytic, planktonic and adherent. In seawater, gram-negative bacilli are predominant, and the common ones are Pseudomonas, Vibrio, Achromobacter, Flavobacterium, Spirobacterium, Micrococcus, Sarcinus, Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Mycozoa, Nocardia and Streptomyces are more than 10 genera. Marine bacteria carry out various chemical processes in the high seas, including most steps in the nitrogen cycle. The potential for biological discovery using marine microorganisms is severely limited by the lack of laboratory cultures. CD BioSciences provides not only the cultivation of marine bacteria but also the identification of marine bacteria.

Our Services

Our outstanding bacterial identification platforms, including Rep-PCR, NGS-based microbial identification, and mycoplasma detection, are designed to efficiently and cost-effectively identify marine bacterial species in a fast, high-throughput and simple manner. Our identification services are listed as follows, but are not limited to:

  • Cyanobacterla identification
  • Chemolithotrophs identification
  • Vibrionaceae identification
  • Rickettsia identification
  • Gram-positive bacteria identification
  • The cytophaga-flavobacterium-bacteroides group identification
  • Sulphate reducing bacteria identification
  • Marine bacteria involved in nitrification identification
    • Ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) identification
    • Nitrite oxidizing bacteria identification
  • Marine bacteria that "fix" nitrogen identification
    • Trichodesmium identification
    • Heterocystus cyanobacteria identification
    • Crocosphaera identification
    • Uncultivated cyanobacteria group A (UCYN-A) identification
    • Alphaproteobacteria and gammaproteobacterial identification
  • Marine bacteria that are primary producers but do not fix nitrogen identification
    • Prochlorococcus identification
    • Synechococcus identification

Our Modes of Bacterial Identification

  • Macroscopic Analysis
The first step in identification is to count the colony forming units grown on agar plates. At CD BioSciences, loose identification can be done by looking at how marine bacteria interact with blood in agar plates.
  • Microscopic Analysis
Applied to a smear of pure bacteria on a microscope slide, CD BioSciences' scientists can see the cell shape of the bacteria as well as the Gram response. Once the bacteria are stained, scientists can note the cell shape of the organism, classifying the bacteria.
  • Microbial Identification to Genus/Species
CD BioSciences can test the different properties that different bacteria, yeasts and filamentous molds exhibit to "fingerprint" organisms.
  • Confirmatory Identification
CD BioSciences offers a wide selection of molecular identification methods, such as: polymerase chain reaction, MALDI-TOF, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and gene sequencing.
  • Chromogenic Agar Identification
CD BioSciences applies chromogenic agar in marine bacterial identification, and chromogenic agar has the advantage of selectivity and differentiation because only specific bacterial species can grow on it.
