Nannochloropsis Production

Nannochloropsis is a marine microalga that occurs in freshwater and marine environments. There are currently 5 known species (Nannochloropsis australis, Nannochloropsis granulata, Nannochloropsis limnetica, Nannochloropsis oceanica, Nannochloropsis oculata). Nannochloropsis is considered an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Nannochloropsis is widely used in many aquaculture hatcheries as the first step in establishing a living food chain. Compared to other unicellular algae, the advantages of Nannochloropsis lie mainly in its unique lipid composition. This unique composition can also be used in the production of cosmetic oils and as dietary supplements. It can also be a good ingredient in animal feed, most commonly fish feed. Nannochloropsis is considered promising algae for industrial applications because of its ability to accumulate high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, it shows promising features that could allow genetic manipulation to improve current oleaginous strains. CD BioSciences has relatively mature large-scale outdoor cultivation system technology to produce Nannochloropsis, which is considered as a potential oil-producing model microalga.
