Squids are mollusks with highly developed sensory and nervous systems, including complex eyes and brains. The giant axon of the squid is the largest known nerve cell in the animal kingdom, and the squid has been used to study the properties of nerve cells and contribute to our understanding of the nervous system. Despite the clear differences between squid and humans, the assumption that our nervous systems work in the same way has led to huge advances in our understanding of neurophysiology. Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a component of the plaques that form in the brain during Alzheimer's disease. Mutations in this protein are known to cause early-onset Alzheimer's disease, but little is known about its role in healthy cells. APP-C in squid is nearly identical to the equivalent peptide in worms, flies, and humans, so it likely plays a similar role in neuronal transport in all animals. APP-C can be used as a label for the transport of drugs to synapses, used in diagnostic studies to determine how much transport is disrupted in dementia, and maybe the cause of disrupted neural transport in Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and others drug targets for disease.
