Marine Microbial Production of Sophorolipid Biosurfactant

Sophorolipids are a group of extracellular biosurfactants produced at high yields by several non-pathogenic yeasts, the most studied of which is Starmerella bombicola. The physicochemical and biological properties of sophorolipids are significantly influenced by the distribution of lactone and acidic forms produced in the fermentation broth. In general, lactone sophorolipids are more effective in reducing surface tension and are better antibacterial agents, while acid sophorolipids showed better foaming properties. Acetyl groups can also reduce the hydrophilicity of sophorolipids and enhance their antiviral and cytokine stimulating effects. Due to its low toxicity and high biodegradability, sophorolipids are currently being explored as biosurfactants in reducing surface and interfacial tension, increasing the dissolution rate of hydrocarbons, and promoting the dissolution and absorption of compounds. In addition to its good surface activity, sophorolipids possess many other useful biological activities, including antibacterial, virucidal, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties. At CD BioSciences, sophorolipids is biosythesised from marine yeast Rhodotorula rubra. In order to improve the surfactant properties of natural sophorolipids, our scientists have been actively exploring chemical modification methods.
