Zooplankton is drift organisms that live in the ocean, especially in pelagic and coastal areas, and in rivers, lakes, and ponds. Most of them are in microscopic, unicellular, or multicellular forms, ranging in size from a few micrometers to a millimeter or more. They are both consumers of algae and other small zooplankton and a food source for larger organisms such as insects and fish. Given their unique position in the food chain, zooplankton is an ideal indicator of water quality. CD BioSciences provides accurate identification, enumeration, and biomass estimation. Accurate estimation of zooplankton biomass by species and developmental stage is critical for simulating ecological processes occurring in the ocean. Estimates of zooplankton biomass can be made by direct determination of microbalances or from the length and/or width relationships.
