Crustacean Cell Culture

Crustacean Cell Culture

Crustaceans are the most numerous invertebrates in the animal kingdom, among which insects have the largest number, accounting for about 94% of arthropods. Crustaceans form a large and diverse taxonomic group of arthropods, which include decapods, species of shrimp, branchlets, lice, krill, pods, isopods, barnacles, copepods, shrimp and other animals. Crustacean cell culture is gaining attention as an effective model to assist in the development of diagnostic reagents and probes for the shrimp, crayfish and lobster industries. In addition, the demand for virus detection and vaccine preparation of artificial cultured shrimp has promoted the development of shrimp cell culture, which has become a research hotspot in marine invertebrate cell culture in recent years. At present, the primary cell culture of shrimp has been successfully cultivated and successfully applied to the detection of prawn viruses and the preparation of vaccines. Although the culture of shrimp cells is still in the stage of primary generation and subculture, and no immortalized cell lines have been established, a lot of experience has been accumulated in culture methods and techniques.

Our Medium for Crustacean Cell Culture

Studies have shown that the osmotic pressure range of seawater crustacean culture medium is generally 720~760 mmol/L; the pH value range is generally 7.0~7.5; 5%~20% fetal bovine serum, and sometimes 20% crustacean muscle extract or lymph fluid can be added. Tissues that are easier to culture mainly include heart, ovary and hemolymph.

Shrimp Cell Applications in Genomic Research, Cellular Biochemistry and Ecotoxicology

  • The establishment of primary shrimp cell culture is an important tool for shrimp genome research, basic research of cell biochemistry and ecotoxicology. Experimental studies have been performed using primary shrimp cell cultures as in vitro models of gene expression and cloning to study functional genes.
  • Cultures of primary shrimp cells are used to evaluate the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of two heavy metal compounds (cadmium chloride and mercury chloride), and two organophosphate pesticides, mala sulfurous and monocyclic.
