Plankton are passively drifting, mostly free-standing plants (phytoplankton) and single-celled animals (zooplankton) in the marine environment. In addition to various macro and micronutrients, seawater also contains non-essential or toxic metals (such as mercury, cadmium, lead, and arsenic) from weathering, leaching, and anthropogenic sources. These metals can be taken up by phytoplankton and cycled in the marine environment or assimilated by consumers and transferred into the marine food web. Uptake by plankton is an important pathway for introducing essential and toxic metals into marine food webs. Phytoplankton have been used to investigate pollution.
