Development of Marine Antiviral Drug

Available treatments for many infectious diseases are limited. In particular, diseases caused by viral pathogens have demonstrated a need for new drugs because of increasing resistance to these existing treatments. Thousands of novel compounds have been isolated from various marine organisms and tested for their pharmacological properties, many of which are commercially available. Screening of natural products derived from marine species for antiviral activity has yielded a large number of active crude aqueous and organic solvent extracts. For example, extracts of marine microalgae exhibited inhibitory effects on the replication of hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) and African swine fever virus (ASFV) in vitro. By focusing on marine organisms, CD BioSciences aims to uncover natural compounds that exhibit potent antiviral activity and can potentially become essential therapeutics in the battle against viral infections. We strive for large-scale production of these compounds to meet the needs of clinical trials and drug development.
