Phytoplankton Analysis

Phytoplankton Analysis

Phytoplankton includes all microscopic algae that drift with currents or float on the surface of oceans, rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. Phytoplankton plays a vital role as the basis of aquatic food webs, providing essential ecological functions for all aquatic organisms. Phytoplankton responds rapidly to environmental changes, so their occurrence, species composition, and diversity are widely used as biological indicators of water quality status. Under certain ecological conditions, phytoplankton can grow faster and reach high densities, leading to algal blooms. Some are natural events that are part of the annual phytoplankton cycle, while some blooms can negatively impact ecosystems and the aquaculture industry and are known as "harmful algal blooms" (HABs). Many parts of the world implement phytoplankton monitoring programs to protect their aquaculture industries. We are experienced in providing regular and one-time phytoplankton monitoring to support projects of all sizes, from single samples to ongoing monthly monitoring regimes.

Our Services

Routine phytoplankton monitoring is also important as a means of screening for potentially toxic and harmful algal blooms. The phytoplankton experts at CD BioSciences have a wealth of expertise and experience. They regularly participate in international quality assurance programs and provide only high-quality phytoplankton analysis services to their clients.

  • Phytoplankton Image Analysis
CD BioSciences plankton image analysis and classification service provides segmentation services to prepare your images for taxonomic identification and classification. We can analyze your images in-house or provide you with a suitable solution.
  • Phytoplankton Sorting
CD BioSciences has developed a suite of automated learning algorithms that can reliably identify and classify taxa from plankton images. From copepods to small chains of diatoms, from jellyfish to juvenile fish, we can help you navigate your collection of images in time.
  • Phytoplankton Identification
Our custom services include rapid analysis of potentially toxic blue-green algae, generation of Water Framework Directive (WFD) biomass data, and survey design and mitigation measures.

Our Techniques

  • Analysis of phytoplankton by flow cytometry
CD BioSciences measures the optical properties of different species of algae on a flow cytometer. The intensity of chlorophyll fluorescence varies widely among the algae studied and can be used to distinguish them.
  • HPLC pigment analysis to investigate phytoplankton
HPLC technology is well established and we use HPLC marker pigments to estimate or characterize the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton assemblages.

Sample Requirement

Sample Requirement

Due to the different types of algae samples, the sample volume and requirements for transportation conditions of each test item are also different. For more information, please view the details page for each test item. The analysis service has no restrictions on phytoplankton species. For varieties or rare varieties with special requirements, please contact our full-time technical staff to determine the sample information.

CD BioSciences is a professional service provider for the marine biology industry. Our phytoplankton analysis services can help you determine the value of your sample and its best use.
