Identification and Quantification of Marine Polyether Toxins

The fate of polyether toxins in the aqueous phase, especially the bacterial biotransformation of toxins, is poorly understood. Polyether marine toxins are responsible for the phenomenon of seafood poisoning known as neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (due to brevistoxin), ciguatera (due to ciguatoxin), and diarrheal shellfish poisoning (due to okadaic acid). Using traditional techniques that combine haptens (pure toxins) with proteins to generate intact antigens, animal immunization, antibody isolation, and purification of specific antibody subpopulations, detectable brachytoxin, and ciguatoxin but not okadaic acid has been isolated distinguishing antibodies. Using microbial chemistry and purified toxins, a unique set of tools was created for studying the accumulation, purification, and site-specific localization of polyether ladder toxins in tissues, food sources, and clinical samples.
