Fatty Acids in Seaweed Analysis

Phycochemistry is the study of natural products and chemical constituents in algae from a biological point of view. The importance of algal lipids lies in particular in their involvement in biofilms. The metabolic behavior of lipids largely depends on the structure of the constituent fatty acids. Typically, fatty acids in algal lipids are straight-chain, even-numbered carbon molecules, often containing one or more double bonds. Although the fatty acid profile in seaweed varies widely, it is generally rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), but omega3 PUFAs are mainly composed of shorter chain FAs. There are also species that contain large amounts (on a dry matter basis) of eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5 omega 3, EPA). Our experts have done extensive work on algal fatty acids, including the fatty acid composition of microalgae as well as seaweeds. The lipid profile of seaweeds varies by species, therefore, it is necessary to evaluate different seaweed species to understand their potential for industrial applications and development, such as food or dietary supplements.
