Potamopyrgus antipodarum is commonly known as the New Zealand mud snail. The P. antipodarum reproduction assay is designed to assess the potential effects of long-term chemical exposure on the reproduction and survival of the parthenogenetic lineage of the freshwater snail P. antipodarum. When testing "difficult chemicals" (i.e., volatile, unstable, readily biodegradable, and adsorbed chemicals), testing can be performed under flow-through conditions as an alternative to semi-static designs with fixed media refresh cycles.

Testing Process

Adult snails are exposed to a range of concentrations of the test chemicals for 28 days. The antipodal survival rate during the 28-day exposure period and reproduction at the end of the test 28 days later are determined without the distinction of the developmental stage.
