Marine Microbial Production of Lipopolysaccharide Biosurfactant

Marine biosurfactants are amphiphilic surface-active molecules produced by marine microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and yeast. Marine biosurfactants have attracted attention in pest control due to their low toxicity, high biodegradability, optimal activity under extreme environmental conditions, and environmental friendliness. Meanwhile, the most relevant biosurfactants produced by marine microorganisms exhibit antibacterial, antiadhesion or antibiofilm activity against different pathogenic microorganisms, and some biosurfactants are effective against a broad spectrum of human pathogens, including Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, and the yeast Candida albicans. High molecular weight biosurfactants are produced by many different marine bacteria, including lipoproteins, proteins, polysaccharides, lipopolysaccharides, or complexes containing several of these structural types. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are macromolecules composed of a lipid and a polysaccharide, which are bacterial toxins. They consist of O antigens, an outer nucleus, and an inner core, all linked by covalent bonds, and present in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. CD BioSciences is a leading provider of surfactant process design and development services to the consumer goods industry and surfactant manufacturers. CD BioSciences utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation to provide customers with microbial synthesis of LPS biosurfactants.
