Diatom Production

Diatoms are algae that live in glass houses. They are the only organisms on earth with cell walls composed of transparent milky silica. The cell walls of diatoms are decorated with intricate and striking patterns of silica. Diatoms are ubiquitous and are an important component of phytoplankton communities, contributing significantly to total marine primary production, such as diatoms are one of the most important and prolific microscopic marine organisms, serving directly or indirectly as food for many animals. In other fields, diatoms are considered unique machines in the biosynthesis of biological materials. Recent advances in synthetic nanotechnology are driven by the global demand for smaller structures that are nearly insatiable by electronic, optical, chemical, or biomedical devices. Diatoms, which produce the vast majority of biogenic silica through the construction of their cell walls, are considered a potential material to meet these needs. In addition, diatoms can be used for material degradation due to their structural and physiological properties. Contamination of soil and water by toxic metals has become increasingly common, and diatoms are important biomarkers for monitoring metal concentrations in different habitats.
