Development of Marine Biosurfactants

Surfactants are substances that can significantly reduce the surface tension of liquids or the interfacial tension of two phases. Surfactants occupy a particularly important position in all aspects of the industrial field, but chemically synthesized surfactants often have problems with raw material sources, prices, product performance, etc. And it also brings certain environmental pollution during production and use. Therefore, researchers have long considered the application of biotechnology to produce surfactants with high activity and specific effects to avoid the above problems. Compared with chemically synthesized surfactants, biosurfactants have potential advantages, including structural diversity (which can provide a wider range of options for specific applications), biodegradability, and mildness to the environment. Therefore, the research on biosurfactants is of great significance. Biosurfactants are mainly classified according to their chemical composition. Biosurfactants are amphiphilic secondary metabolites produced by microorganisms. Marine bacteria have recently become a rich source of these natural products, which are surface active, making them useful in a variety of applications, such as detergents, wetting agents, foaming agents, solubilizers, emulsifiers, and dispersants.
