Isolation of Marine Peptide Toxins

Marine biotoxins are one of the most rapidly developing fields of marine bioactive substances, and are also a hotspot in the research of new marine drugs. Among them, peptide toxins are the most toxic toxins. These marine peptide toxins specifically act on ion channels or subtypes of molecular receptors and they have specific physiological activities, such as analgesia, cardiotonic, antihypertensive, antiviral, anesthesia, etc. Therefore, marine peptide toxins have become an important source of clinical drugs. At the same time, as molecular probes, marine peptide toxins are also powerful tools in neuroscience to study the structure and function of ion channels or molecular receptor subtypes. The representative marine polypeptide toxins include sea anemone toxin, conotoxin, sea snake toxin, jellyfish toxin, spiny fish toxin, etc. Peptides extracted from marine sources have different functions and structures compared to peptides isolated from terrestrial sources. Most bioactive compounds isolated from marine environments are obtained from symbiotic microorganisms. Among these microorganisms, bacteria are an important source of peptide toxins, isolated by metagenomic studies from complex gene networks expressed under marine conditions.
