Since marine invertebrates have many applications in medicine and biosciences and pharmaceuticals due to their valuable metabolites, related research on stem cell culture in marine invertebrates has increased dramatically in recent years. Stem cells are considered the body's progenitor cells. In fact, the culture of these cells is a developed cell culture that maintains the ability to proliferate throughout adult life from birth to death, and these stem cells are able to differentiate into different cell types. Stem cells are the product of experimental manipulation, and marine invertebrate cells are natural products and are ubiquitous in marine invertebrates. Stem cells of so-called marine invertebrate origin are capable of self-renewal or naturally occurring, low-potency to totipotent, or cells with permanent embryonic characteristics. They are entities with a spatial and temporal orientation, existing infinitely and healthily within their internal tissues.

Culture Routes of Marine Invertebrate Stem Cells

The culture of marine invertebrate stem cells generally follows two research routes applied in mammalian systems.

  • The first is to use adult stem cells derived from these tissues as target cell types.
  • The second route is to target quiescent somatic components and manipulate them with induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.

The above method is based on the condition that the cells of various marine invertebrates stop dividing within 24 to 72 hours after isolation in vitro, and the cells enter a resting state.
