Chemical Modifications of Alginate

Alginate, a polysaccharide extracted from seaweed, is abundant in resources and shows great potential in various industrial applications. However, alginates lack properties such as stability under aqueous conditions, and it is difficult to control the degradation rate of alginate-based materials, which is critical for various medical applications. Alginates have a large number of free hydroxyl and carboxyl groups distributed along the backbone of the polymer chain, therefore, unlike neutral polysaccharides, it has two types of functional groups that can be modified to alter properties compared to the parent compound. Therefore, researchers have modified alginates using physical or chemical methods to enhance physical properties, biocompatibility, and solubility, and also to control the biodegradability of alginate-based materials. Cross-linking using ionic, covalent, optical, and enzymatic methods is one of the preferred methods for altering the properties of alginates and their derivatives. In addition, the zwitterion-modified alginate can alleviate the foreign body reaction or cellular overgrowth caused by biomaterials, which can make alginate have a wide range of applications in biomedicine.
