Characterization of Marine Biosurfactant

It is necessary to identify genes that may be involved in the BS synthesis process to understand marine biosurfactant synthesis and develop robust marine biosurfactant-producing strains with high production capacity. The most well-characterized low molecular weight marine biosurfactants are rhamnolipids, produced by several species of Pseudomonas and Burkholderia. Most genetic studies of marine biosurfactant production are limited to well-characterized marine biosurfactant molecules, but the expression of genes involved in marine biosurfactant synthesis has not been well studied in marine bacteria. The genes and regulatory pathways are not necessarily the same among different marine biosurfactant producers. Different species can produce marine biosurfactants with completely different chemical structures, and even small changes in the homolog composition of surfactants can greatly affect their functional properties. To fully understand how marine biosurfactant synthesis is regulated in these marine strains, it is important to characterize the chemical structures and essential genes required for marine biosurfactant synthesis. At CD BioSciences, the chemical composition of marine biosurfactant can be determined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques.
